5 Successful Online Course Creators Share Their Secrets

Want to hear how other successful online course creators become successful? In this blog, we interview 5 successful online course creators who are currently making 6-7 figures selling their courses online.

Jacques Hopkins

How Jacques Hopkins makes over 6 figures a month selling his online piano lessons course

1: What is the name of your signature course?
Piano in 21days

2: What’s your approx yearly revenue from your online course(s)?1Million USD

3: How long did it for ‘online courses’ to be your major form of income? So for me, it was probably 3-4 years, I got the idea in March 2013, I launched in October 2013. I  quit my job in Dec 2015 when I was making a thousand dollars a month- because I want to spend more time on it. And it was late 2016 when it started to exceed what I’m making at my job. So it took 3 years

4: What platform do you currently use to host your courses? I’m using Buddyboss and Learndash. Really excited to tell you about that. This is something I’ve been working on months on months on months

Hosting my course is the Learndash part, and Buddyboss is the social component, and community and social profiles

5: What’s ONE piece of advice you have for an up-and-coming online Course Creator to be one of the Successful Online Course Creators? Never give up on the relentless pursuit of student feedback- I think that’s incredibly important in any industry, any business- to get the right feedback from your clients, your customers, your students- in our case course creators.

And so I think that a lot of people are getting into it for the passive income, enjoy making sales while you sleep, and just kinda in the relationship there thinking I already made the videos. Now it’s their job to get income passively. But I don’t think it’s not a great way to grow and make better and always make sure that you got the best product out there that you could possibly have.

Consistently constantly reaching out to your students asking for feedback on how to be better.. What obstacles they have.. How you can be helping them better and continue to take that feedback and apply it to your course would be one piece of advice.

6: What’s the best way someone can connect with you? That would be pianoin21days.com or The Online Course Show

2: What is your approx yearly revenue from your online course(s)? Around $850k USD from my own courses, and another 100-200k from selling other people’s courses.

3: How long did it for ‘online courses’ to be your major form of income Around 2.5 years.

4: What platform do you currently use to host your courses? Kajabi

5: What’s ONE piece of advice do you have for up-and-coming online Course Creator to be one of the Successful Online Course Creators?

Don’t just launch your online course once.

One of my courses has brought in over $850,000 in 18 months, but the very first launch brought in less than $4,000. It’s only by launching it multiple times before evergreening it, that I was able to scale it.

6: What’s the best way someone can connect with you?

Jason Dion

Jason Dion

1: What is the name of your signature course?  We have multiple courses, but our best seller is the “ITIL 4 Foundation” course. This course is designed to help people pass their IT Service Management certification exam.

2: What’s your approx yearly revenue from your online course(s)?7-figures (this includes all of our courses…we have about 30 of them)

3: How long did it for ‘online courses’ to be your major form of income  It took about 12 months for my online courses business to replace my “day job” income. At that point, I had 3 courses and was earning about $10,000 per month.

4: What platform do you currently use to host your courses? Our revenue is split primarily between two sources: Udemy and our own website (hosted onThinkific). We also have a few courses on LinkedIn Learning and distributed by Packt Publishing.

5: What’s ONE piece of advice do you have for up-and-coming online Course Creator to be one of the Successful Online Course Creators? Create a venn diagram of your skills/knowledge, what is needed in the marketplace currently, and what is going to be popular in the future. If you can find something that overlaps in all three categories, the you are set up for success. For example, Amazon Web Services (AWS) is extremely popular and needed in the marketplace, but if you have never worked as an AWS developer or engineer, then you should not try to make a course on it.

On the other hand, if you are truly passionate about some extremely niche topic that only 25 people in the entire world care about, then you won’t be able to make a business surrounding this topic unless you charged $10,000 per person, and even then, you would have a maximum business revenue of $250,000 one time in your life, even if you sold to everyone in the world (all 25 people) who liked that topic.

Balance your skills and what the world needs.

Put your students first and help them succeed. When they succeed, they become your marketing force and tell everyone else about you!

6: What’s the best way someone can connect with you? The best way to reach me is through my website, diontraining.com. (I don’t provide coaching or one-on-one guidance to course creators, though…it isn’t my business model.)
